Lydia Canton
Dispensing Optician FBDO
I began my optical career in 2001 with a large supplier based in Chester. Starting out as an Optical Assistant, I quickly advanced to the role of Staff Trainer and later qualified as a Dispensing Optician in 2009.
I went on to work for practice in Watchfield buying frames and helping the practice grow successfully. I loved encouraging our patients to embrace colour and express their personality through their eyewear choices. In 2022, I moved onto a new venture, Malmesbury Opticians, where my husband and I have created a warm, inviting environment designed to help patients feel comfortable and relaxed.
At Make a Spectacle, I look forward to continuing my passion for delivering the perfect patient journey, from discussing lens designs to helping choose stylish, individual frames. Sourcing just the right styles from our suppliers is one of the most enjoyable parts of my work.
Outside of the practice, I enjoy walking my dogs, getting creative with arts and crafts, and (more often than not) beating my husband at Scrabble — he loves it!

Emma Avis
Dispenser
I started in optics in 1992 at Kennet Optical, where I was responsible for supplying perfectly crafted spectacles to a local chain of opticians. In 1999, I moved to Southampton to broaden my skill set, continuing to work within manufacturing optics.
Later, I moved to Swindon and headed up the customer service division for a small optical prescription laboratory. In 2010, I began working with David and Lydia at the practice in Watchfield.
Now, at Make A Spectacle, my passion for optics continues. I love wearing funky frames and helping people feel happy and confident in their eyewear, encouraging them to try styles they might not usually consider. With my background in optics, I’m always hands-on when it comes to lens design and frame repairs.
Outside of work, I enjoy a good horror movie and looking after four-legged waifs and strays.

David Canton
Dispensing Optician FBDO
I began my optical career in 1992 at Norville Optical, where I received traditional manufacturing training. Later, I worked at American Optical, managing major accounts, training staff, and delivering presentations internationally.
In 2004, I partnered a new practice in Watchfield, which grew successfully. During my Dispensing Optician qualification, I met Lydia, and together we bought a practice in Malmesbury. Through strong customer service and clinical excellence, we developed Malmesbury Opticians into the busiest practice in town.
My focus remains on providing the best visual solutions through careful attention to detail. At Make A Spectacle, we will continue to offer a fantastic, personalised service solving optical challenges and ensuring that your eyecare is second to none.
Outside of work, my passions are golf and padel. I’m always enthusiastic about both, although the knees are starting to let me down!
